Why should I keep checking my credit report?

There are 3 main reasons to check your credit report:

  • Changing jobs or home

When you apply for a new job or try to rent a home, employers and landlords may look at parts of your credit report. If you don’t keep it accurate and up to date, it may harm your chances of getting the job or having your rental application accepted.

  • Applying for credit

Before you apply for a new credit account (e.g. credit card or mobile phone contract) you should check it is accurate and up to date. If not your application is more likely to be rejected.

  • Protecting against ID fraud

Regularly checking your credit report will enable you to spot suspicious entries that may be a sign of identity fraud. It's important to catch such problems early, before they become serious issues, which take far more time and effort to sort out.

If there is an error on your credit report, you should contact the relevant bank or financial institution to have it corrected.
